The new Jodrell Bank brand launches today, in the lead up to the public opening of the First Light Pavilion this summer. The new brand centres on the idea of 'creating wonder' and takes inspiration from the First Light Pavilion.
Designed by Casson Mann, this visitor centre presents the human story of Jodrell Bank - the world’s first radio astronomy site and home to the radio telescope that detected quasars, pulsars, black holes, and the rocket path of Sputnik 1.
The Jodrell Bank visual identity takes the form of the Lovell Telescope - like the telescope, the elliptical, moving logo turns, tilts and comes to life. Casson Mann conceived of making the exhibition fabric from the skin of this landmark telescope, bringing visitors into direct contact with the authentic metal dish that has ‘looked’ towards the heavens and been touched by cosmic rays and ‘space dust.’ Its textured panels become an exploded digital canvas, mapping both the earthly histories of pioneering Jodrell scientists and the cosmic sphere which they revealed to humankind.
