The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge in Canterbury has been shortlisted for Kids in Museums' Family Friendly Museum Award 2023. The award recognises the museums, galleries and heritage sites that are most welcoming, fun and accessible for families. It is the only museum award judged by families themselves.
Casson Mann redesigned this museum, library and art gallery in 2012 to re-present its diverse collections, which span ethnology, natural history, archaeology, decorative and fine art. We created a huge Cabinet of Curiosities to introduce visitors to the collections - stuffed birds, Greek vases, regimental trophies, Siberian maps, shoes and muskets – filling the room with variety and interest. Central tables equipped with drawers, irresistible investigative tools, and learning games provide fun for audiences. The atmosphere is welcoming and puts families at the heart of the experience.
We're delighted to see this recognition of The Beaney's lasting success at delivering for audiences. The museum promotes learning through play, aiming at starting conversations and exploration in communities as early as possible. With creative activities, musical instruments, kaleidoscopes, toys, games, costumes and more, The Beaney offers a range of fun interactive activities for families to get the most of their visit.

“Congratulations to our wonderful shortlist! What made these venues stand out in an exceptionally strong year of applications was how embedded they are in their local communities."
