After a six-year closure, the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons of England re-opens on Tuesday, 16th May. Casson Mann's ambitious re-design of the museum includes contemporary, interpretive galleries and object displays, interactive and projected media, and soundscapes that draw visitors into the strange and fascinating world of John Hunter.

Part of a larger redevelopment of the RCS England headquarters at Lincoln’s Field Inn in central London, the project afforded an opportunity to relocate and improve the museum, which welcomes over 90,000 visitors a year through its extensive public events programme.

Complex, fascinating, sometimes uncomfortable, Casson Mann’s redesign of the Hunterian Museum draws out the story of John Hunter and anatomy, helping visitors understand the significance of his incredible collection.

"Many things inspired us about the brief for the new Hunterian Museum, but we are delighted to have had the opportunity to redisplay this valuable yet highly sensitive collection, so that new generations of visitors can engage and reflect on the content."

Roger Mann, founder and director, Casson Mann

"We have achieved a fascinating museum with a series of evocative and readable rooms that explore the development of medical and surgical knowledge. At the heart of the exhibition is the incredible specimen collection. Hunter’s story gives real meaning to the collections so that visitors understand his considerable contributions to modern medicine."

John Pickford, project lead and director, Casson Mann
