Opened from 2000 to 2006, the Digitopolis gallery presented the exceptional ways in which new technologies have changed our experience of the world. Visitors were encouraged to find their own way through the powers of digital technology by exploring, playing and making discoveries. Structures running the length of the gallery housed objects, information and games – from robots to artificial intelligence, from global communications to digital sound interactives. These structures provided their own lighting, through the use of electro-luminescent lamps within the darkened exhibition space. Exhibits on display included the computer on which the World Wide Web was invented and robots used by scientists to understand the social origins of human intelligence.
