"At their best, exhibitions turn visitors into explorers of unknown worlds – whether it is immersing themselves in the soul of an artist or exploring new cultures and phenomena: the Übersee Museum Bremen transports travelers – sorry, visitors – to the opposite point of the globe – to Oceania.

Through interactive installations, soundscapes, poems and personal narratives, visitors experience the full diversity of Oceania and gain an impression of the enormous cultural and biological diversity on this relatively small landmass."

The show was entirely designed by London-based Casson Mann, an internationally renowned agency for scenography and exhibition design. To address the concerns of indigenous peoples and Pacific communities, the team brought Samoans onto the curatorial team. The design concept is also influenced by Pacific thinking: land and sea are viewed as a single entity, transforming the museum journey into an adventurous expedition on land and water. A digital waterfall of words washes over visitors, highlighting the astonishing linguistic diversity of the island world of New Guinea. Reenactments of erupting volcanoes demonstrate how islands and archipelagos are formed. Surfing is also no problem at the Overseas Museum! While balancing on the interactive surfboard, visitors learn more about the significance of the sport in pre-colonial culture. Even tattooing is (imaginarily) possible by holding one's arm under the projection of a modern tattoo gun."
