Casson Mann’s bold design for The Blue Continent – Islands in the Pacific at Übersee Museum, Bremen – plunges visitors from Bremen into the Pacific. In the centre of the atrium is the ‘The Island’, a towering mass of live plants inspired by the atolls of the Pacific Ocean, which rises from the sea-blue gallery floor. Established in 1887, the museum houses Bremen’s natural history collection with objects originating primarily from the South Pacific. This redesign shifts perspectives, allowing a collective, non-Eurocentric museum voice to share the stories of the collection. Surrounding the Island are areas exploring diversity, identity and migration, colonialism, resources and climate change.
